“The Importance of Independent Research”

Speaker

Kim Davey

More on this month's speaker below

Every organization has a need for an independent research team to analyze trends in their organization and to recommend improvements to current operations.  In the US Air Force the logistics community had just such a team at the Air Force Logistics Management Agency.  The professionals assigned to this agency led independent research for all levels of the Air Force in order to improve logistics operations around the world.  This presentation will go over the role of the Air Force Logistics Management Agency and cover a couple of case studies of some of the research accomplished by this team.

New Format for the CSCP Course

The Tucson APICS Chapter is making changes to the presentation of the CSCP class that will provide a challenging new format to CSCP candidates. We will switch from the 13 week evening format to a 5 Saturday format. The classes will meet every other Saturday starting Oct 11, and finishing on the 6 of December to prepare you for the exam on December 13th. This will include an overview to the exam as well as a review and an in class sample exam.

The class will be offered with a two year guarantee, if you should have to re-take the exam you are eligible to sit through any or all portions of the CSCP class at no additional expense. Also lunch will be delivered and be included in the cost of class and we will still continue to discount the cost of the class with an early sign-up. (You must enroll prior to Sep 26 to get the discount.)

The CSCP class will be taught by a team of exceptionally qualified instructors.

President's Message

June signals the end to the Tucson APICS Chapter operating year, and another truly outstanding year it has been.  We successfully expanded our Educational catalog to include not only the continued offering of CPIM review and Fundamentals, also for the first time, we scheduled classes supporting the Certified Supply Chain Professional (CSCP) designation.  CSCP classes are timed to coincide with the CSCP test offering such that the students have the best shot at applying their newly acquired knowledge directly to the certification exam.  Recognizing the time constraints and urgency that our careers place on our professional and personal lives, the Chapter also has been able this year to offer accelerated CPIM classes wherein all five modules are addressed over ten alternating weekends.

Another area of great success for the Chapter has been our monthly Professional Development Meetings and Seminars.  Each and everyone our monthly dinners meeting featured an outstanding speaker and topic.  While we, and the APICS organization, have both embraced the importance of Lean Manufacturing as significant enough to warrant PDM, Seminar and Class attention this year, my personal favorite for the year was our April PDM.  In April, we were treated to a presentation by Rigal Woida of the University of Arizona’s Phoenix Mars Scout mission.  The mission has just seen a very anxious, exciting and successful landing on Mars, casting a great deal of appropriate praise on the University and the mission participants.

The Chapter will also be installing our new 2008/2009 Board of Directors during the June PDM.  We’d like to extend our thanks and appreciation for all their hard work to departing BOD members; Stacy Gigger (VP Awards), Wayne Heckman (VP Administration), Kim Davey (VP Publicity) and Karen Turner (VP of Membership, and Company Coordinator).  Karen has been on the BOD for 11 consecutive years, and like the other, will be very greatly missed.  The flip side is the arrival of Pat Montcastle as our Director of Company Coordinators; Rene Reichardt as VP of Membership, and the return of Liz Boxler at VP of Awards.  The balance of the Board will be returning members:

VP Finance- Brian Bunnell

VP Education-Julie Andreu

VP Administration-Yasmi Fitch

VP Webmaster-Erich Holzer

VP Programs-Dwight Comer

Director Education-Karen Ruhland

President, Student Liaison-Joel Lohr

If you think you missed out on an opportunity to assist on the BOD and bolster that resume and gain certification maintenance points, think again.  The BOD always has need of assistance on a project basis too and welcomes your help.

See you at the June meeting.

Joel

Rigel WoidaSpeaker – Kim Davey, Major, USAF (Retired)

Kim held several leadership positions while in the Air Force where she was able to shape logistics operations at all levels of the organization.  She was a Commander of two squadrons leading personnel to provide all supply, fuels, and transportation support to Fairchild AFB, WA.  Kim was the Supply Chain Management Division Chief at the Air Force Logistics Management Agency, leading her personnel to complete over 60 studies to improve Air Force Logistics operations.  She has over twenty years of highly successful leadership and logistics management experience.  Career highlights include extensive roles in improving Department of Defense and Air Force logistics operations, change management, warehousing, budget execution, inventory control, forecasting, logistics analysis, and personnel management.

Education News:

APICS’ new Lean Enterprise Workshop Series, a seven module course that has been designed in recognition of the demand in the marketplace for education about lean. The series will be available for purchase in July 2008, but in preparation for the launch we are informing you in advance so that instructors may be identified and classes scheduled.

APICS will be offering a Lean Enterprise Workshop Series Train the Trainer course the week of June 2, 2008, at its corporate offices in Chicago. Course registration is free. Instructors who are interested in participating must complete an application and be sponsored by a chapter.

About the APICS Lean Enterprise Workshop Series
The APICS Lean Enterprise Workshop Series has been developed during the last year by a team of instructional design professionals and subject matter experts. The series is organized to enable participants to approach the lean transformation process systematically. Using scenarios from a fictitious company, Murphy’s Toys, participants are tasked with finding lean solutions to a myriad of challenges. The Murphy’s Toys model enables instructors to customize the material for organizations and industries.

College Credit Recommendations Program

The American Council on Education (ACE) and The New York State Board of Regents recommend college credit is awarded for successful completion of exams in both the APICS CPIM and APICS CIRM programs. College faculty review teams, chosen based on subject-matter expertise, evaluated each exam to determine college-level equivalency. The college credit recommendations can be used to

  • obtain college credit from an accredited college or university
  • qualify for job advancement and salary increases
  • meet educational requirements for professional licensure or certification
  • qualify for veterans' or insurance benefits
  • enter new areas of employment.

Participating colleges and universities have agreed to consider credit recommendations for both the APICS CPIM and APICS CIRM exams because of the integrity of the ACE and New York State Board of Regents examination review process. To learn how you can earn college credits download the summary of the ACE review or the summary of the New York State Board of Regents review for more information.

For the list of exams that have been reviewed for college credit recommendation and to find out the maximum number of credits that can be granted for each, please download the Credit Recommendation Table.
